Computer Beeping Codes

Well I am just going to give a brief description of them and whichever one you hear the most you'll know what that means!

  • One Short Beep - As far as I am concerned everything is fine and working according to plan
  • Two Short Beeps - It will most likely write an error with an ERROR code and you should write it down so you can search about it on the web to see how to solve it!
  • NO Beep - You probably wish that was a good news but unfortunately it could mean either a System Board or a Power Supply problems!
  • Continuous Beeping - Could be the most difficult to describe because it has over 3 possibilities such as Keyboard, System Board, or a Power Supply problem!
  • Short Repeated Beeps - means two choices either System Board or Power Supply problem!
  • One Long and One Short beep - It's mainly a System Board Problem
  • One Long and Two Short Beeps - It's a Display Adapter problem(CGA,MDA)
Maybe is just me but Don't you find it annoying that over 4 different beep types could be referring to one main problem System Board Problem

What is Read Only Memory(ROM)?

Well for starters it's a type of memory that you can't really write to! Only Manufactures have written some type of information to the ROM chips!

Not too long ago you could only update it by physicly replacing it and buy a new one! But on today's technology you could really update it from the manufacturer's updating site, like in a familiar way as if you are updating drivers for your sound card, video card and etc...

That's why it's no longer called ROM chips but an EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory) or just EPROM (Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory)!

One of the major firmwares used on ROM, EEPROM is called BIOS(Basic Input /Output System) that includes a Power On Self Test (POST) task and other tasks that help the loading of the currently installed Operating System (XP,VISTA,Win7 and etc...)!

POST makes conection possible between devices and the operating system.

Keep the Processor at a Low Temperature!

If the proccesor isn't kept down at a cool temeprature, then really you won't be able to process things as fast as you like, on top of that you might not be able to proccess anything at all cause the processor might burn out and crash!

So it has to be kept down at a cool temperature especially whent its processing dozens of tasks at once.

There are Different types of Colling Devices then the just the regular Heat Sink or CPU FAN!

  • Liquid Cooling for example happens to be a cooling liquid throught the computer by using small hoses! The only main good think about it is the reduced noise, but it has gone trough deep problems sush as leaking! You can honestly say that safety is a concern!

  • Temperature Sensors - many processors have a built in thermal sensor that allows the processor to notice if its overheating or not! And if it is overheating then it will shut it self down untill the temperature drops back to normal!

  • Thermal Compound - well it's mainly a source of liquid that is located between the processor and the heat sink to pull the heat away from the processor and send it through the heat sink!
